Fall 2021 Samiat Solebo
The College of Arts and Sciences is delighted to announce that Samiat Solebo will be awarded the inaugural Promoting Equality in the Sciences Scholarship. Samiat is a senior in the Department of Politics and Government.She has been extremely active on campus as well as an excellent student. Samiat has been active in student government and in 2019 became the second African American to serve as student body president. As President of SGA, she advocated for representation on the Student Governance Association by the Student Disability Network and the Black Greek Leadership Counsel. She advocated for these additions to SGA to expand the voices contributing to student governance. As student body president, Samiat was active in the recent anti-racism advocacy and worked with the University administration to develop the plan to become a more inclusive community for all students. Samiat also participated in the Minority Students for a Political Change movement. To quote Samiat “The work of advocating for change, is something I am always passionate about and as difficult it can be, I enjoy doing it and want to continue it as long as I can.” All these experiences have led this young, rising student to plan on pursuing a law degree to become a civil rights attorney. Samiat Solebo is committed to turning her experiences with oppression into positive change for a more equitable and just society.
