Environmental scientists develop solutions to hazards facing our planet. They also dedicate their lives to preserving the environment.
Our program prepares you for a rewarding career in a growing and vibrant job sector. You’ll study complex environmental challenges, like pollution, climate change, and harmful waste. You’ll also develop potential sustainable solutions that can make a positive impact on our planet.
Why Study Environmental Systems Science and Sustainability?
Environmental Systems Science and Sustainability at Illinois State is an interdisciplinary program. You’ll take courses from a variety of areas at Illinois State. This exposes you to more perspectives, and gives you a deeper and engaging learning experience.
Besides classroom learning, our program offers you real, hands-on experiences. You’ll work with the latest technology and learn in a professional lab setting.
Many of our students go on field expeditions and conduct research across the world with faculty. You can also supplement your classroom learning with a professional internship.
When you finish our program, you’ll join the ranks of alumni who are environmental leaders, problem solvers, and change agents.

Being Successful in the Field
- Bachelor's degree qualifies you for entry-level positions in government and industry.
- Master's degree qualifies you for community college teaching and advancement in industry and government.
- Ph.D. is required for research and teaching positions in colleges and universities and senior positions in government and industry.
- Obtain volunteer, part-time, summer, internship, or co-op experience in your area of interest.
- Join professional organizations such as the American Geography Society or the National Council for Geographic Education.
- Become a member of groups directed toward improvement of natural resources or environment and pollution control.
- Maintain knowledge of current environmental issues including policy, conservation, and industry trends.
