Russell Leads the Redbirds in Non-Conference Victory

December 7th, 2012 by Ronnie Szudarski

The ISU Women’s basketball team pulled off the upset Friday night at Redbird Arena as they knocked off Big 10 opponent Northwestern by a final score of 64-46.  They were led by senior guard Jamie Russell who put up 24 points.  ISU never trailed once throughout the game.

Early in the contest, Northwestern center Dannielle Diamant was taken out with an ankle injury. Diamant is the leading scorer so far this season for the Wildcats. The Redbirds capitalized, knocking down a number of big three-pointers.  Katie Winge came off the bench and scored nine quick points all from beyond the arch.  Midway through the first half, the Redbirds took only one shot from within the paint.  Both teams looked to be very confused on offense early on, surrendering five turnovers a piece.

Northwestern struggled up until the seven minute mark, getting a couple easy baskets from back-up center Alex Cohen.  The Redbirds were able to get Cohen and Kendall Hackney of the Wildcats into foul trouble utilizing the base line and the fast break efficiently.  The team was able to sink seven of their first eight free throws.  Northwestern began to pour a majority of their offense into Hackney as she went 5-14 from the field with over half of the team’s points.

Both teams went into the locker room with low field goal percentage as the Redbirds led by a score of 30-25.  ISU definitely had the advantage outhustling Northwestern, especially Senior Jamie Russell.  Russell was able to move the ball well inside throughout the first half and hitting all four looks from the free throw line.

The Redbirds continued to rely on the hustle and muscle of Russell early in the second half.  Russell earned seven quick points and added six offensive rebounds to her repertoire.  Alexis Foley was also able to get five quick points for herself early on.  ISU took their biggest lead at nine points with around thirteen minutes remaining in regulation.  It was as if the teams completely switched game plans at the half.  Northwestern continuously attempted to force up three-pointers behind Hackney and her nineteen points.  The two power houses of Russell and Hackney went back and forth until late in the second half.  The Birds on the other hand chose to put on the Jamie Russell show.  ISU was able to consistently hold the lead, but could not quite put the Wildcats away as they kept finding ways to climb back in.

Finally it looked as if ISU could seal the deal as Russell dished it out to Maddy Oliver for two extremely easy baskets which put the team up 59-46.  No signs of life from the Wildcats as they put this one to bed.

Illinois State will play next against Ball State on December 16th.

Redbirds fall to #5 Louisville 69-66

December 2nd, 2012 by Mike Obrien

The Illinois State Redbirds (5-2) fell to the 5th ranked Louisville Cardinals Saturday at the KFC Yum Center 69-66.

The redbirds were in control and leading for most of the game but Louisville’s offense seemed too much for ISU to handle. The ‘Birds outscored the Cardinals 33-25 in the first half and got outscored 44-33 in the second. Tyler Brown led all scorers with 25 points shooting 3-8 from three point range.

Jackie Carmichael was just one rebound away from another double-double as he finished with 20 points and 9 rebounds. Brown and Carmichael were the only two redbirds to finish with double digit efforts, Johnny Hill finished with 8.

The leading scorer for the Cardinals was Russ Smith who finished with 24 points as his cardinals out rebounded the redbirds 30-27 despite Louisville’s 14-25 effort from the free-throw line.

Depth on offense was a problem from the redbirds as the bench players they have relied on were not able to overcome tough Cardinal defense. Anthony Cousin split time with Johnny Hill due to an injury for freshman Kaza Keane, Keane did not play in the game.

Sharpshooters Bryant Allen and Nick Zeisloft shot only 2-7 combined from behind the arc and the only other scoring came from John Wilkins who finished with 3.

The redbirds next game is against Wyoming on Tuesday in Normal, tip-off is set for 7:05.
