We are now well into the Spring 2013 semester, and there is much to report in the world of languages, literatures, and cultures.

The Department just completed a search for a new Assistant Professor of French and is delighted to announce that Professor Erin Ponnou-Delaffon will be joining the faculty just in time for the beginning of the Fall 2013 semester.

As you can also see from the various news items published in this newsletter, our students, faculty, and alumni have been very busy, whether volunteering in our local communities, working to expand the Department’s study abroad offerings, or just learning how to dance salsa or samba.

Our Facebook page continues to attract new viewers. We currently have about 200 ‘likes,’ which makes us very happy, of course, but we would like to see this number rise much, much higher. So if you haven’t already ‘liked’ our page, please do so!

The Grenoble summer program marks its 43rd anniversary!

Dr. Lorie Heggie, Director of ISU’s Grenoble summer program, will once again accompany a group of students to France this summer. The group will spend six weeks taking classes at the Université Stendhal in Grenoble, following a few days in Paris. There will also be opportunities to go hiking in the Alps and to visit points of interest in and around Grenoble. For information about the Grenoble summer program, please contact Dr. Lorie Heggie at lheggie@ilstu.edu or 309, 438-7579

Scholarships for French study abroad

Once again, we will be awarding the Petrossian-Tarrant Study Abroad scholarship, established in honor of Dr. George Petrossian, who directed our Grenoble program for more than thirty years, and Dr. Patrick Tarrant, former professor of French at ISU. The awardee will receive roughly $2,000 for summer study abroad in a French-speaking region or country.

In the spring of 2011, a new scholarship was established for French majors who wish to study for a semester or full year abroad with ISU’s program at the Université Catholique de l’Ouest in Angers or in another French-speaking country. This Scholarship for French Study Abroad is also available to students who wish to study French in Quebec City or elsewhere during the summer, but priority is given to French majors for study abroad during the school year. If you’d like to contribute to this new scholarship fund, checks can be mailed to Illinois State University Foundation, Campus Box 8000, Normal, IL 61761-8000. Be sure to note the name of the scholarship in the memo line of your check: “Scholarship for French Study Abroad.” For information about our study-abroad programs in Angers or Quebec City, please contact Ms. Laura Edwards at lcedwar@ilstu.edu or 309, 438-3279.

Applications for both scholarships are due in early April and can be accessed from the LAN department’s website. Students interested in the second scholarship must submit a FAFSA form to the Financial Aid Office by March 1.

ISU’s French Club will continue to meet this semester from 3:30-5:00 pm in room 113 of Stevenson Hall (next to the LAN department office). Please join us there for light refreshments and French conversation. Among the events planned for this semester are a presentation by a former Peace Corps volunteer who served in Togo, a boules tournament in April, and an end-of-the-semester party at which scholarships for study abroad will be awarded. (Dates and other events to be announced.)

French Honors Society

In November, the ISU chapter of the French Honors Society Pi Delta Phi met at the home of chapter moderator, Laura Edwards, and inducted eight regular members: Kyanne N. Baker, Jessica Campbell, Anastasia Nadia Jareckyj, Jacqueline Space, Emily Haffner, Samantha Hennessy, Molly Shanahan, and Elsa V. Torner.

Présidente Sarah Brock and Vice-Présidente Mackenzie Leach lit the candles to begin the ceremony and read the welcome and goals of Pi Delta Phi. Secrétaire Samantha Hennessy and Trésorière Jessica Campbell read the history. Each incoming member chose a French poem to recite during the ceremony. A post-induction meal of crêpes, raclette, fruit and truffles, was consumed in joyful celebration.
