The Department of History held its annual Spring Awards Ceremony and Reception on April 30, 2013.  Twenty student awards were presented and eight students were inducted into Phi Alpha Theta, the National History Honor Society.

Faculty/Staff News

Georgia Tsouvala has just signed on to serve as co-director of WIU’s study abroad program in Italy this summer.  One of our students, Dan Magnetta, will participate in the program.

Kat Paehler will give a paper, “Nazi Foreign Intelligence, Italy, and Gender,” at the international “Intelligence in the Mediterranean and the Balkans” conference in Athens, Greece in June.

Student Worker Wanted Beginning Fall 2013

The History Department (SCH 301) is looking for a student worker who is available during the lunch hour, Monday through Friday, to cover the reception desk, prepare copy and scanning jobs and handle general office work.  Job begins August 19, ten hours a week, $8.50 an hour.  To apply, contact Linda Spencer at ljspenc@ilstu.edu or stop by the office for an application.

Congratulations to Faculty/Staff

John Reda’s chapter, “From Subjects to Citizens:  Two Pierres and the French Influence of the Transformation of the Illinois Country,” was published in Engelbert and Teasdale, eds., French and Indians in the Heart of North America, 1630-1815 (Mich. State Univ. Press, 2013).

Touré Reed published “Oscar Handlin and the Problem of Ethnic Pluralism and African American Civil rights” in the Journal of American Ethnic History32, no. 3 (Spring 2013): 37-45.

Hemanth Kadambi presented a paper, “Constituting Royal-Dynastic Identity in South India: Negotiations in a Sacred Landscape (ca. 550-750 AD),” at the annual meetings for the Society for American Archaeology in Honolulu, Hawaii.

IMPORTANT INFO. for All History-Social Sciences Ed. Majors

There  has been a change to receiving the Middle-School Endorsement.  In the past, many students re-enrolled after graduating and took Psych 302 and TCH 233.01 as Graduate Students At Large to add the endoresement.  Unfortunately, because the transcript notes that you cannot receive graduate credit for 233.01, the state is ignoring both the class and the grade.  As a result, the College of Education is suggesting that all students scheduled to graduate in May do one of the following:    Middle School Endorsement Handout
