Employees as Ambassadors and their Effect on Corporate Reputation

By: Pete Smudde on Wednesday, April 17th, 2013 at 9:20 am

http://www.instituteforpr.org/2013/04/employees-as-ambassadors-and-their-affect-on-corporate-reputation/?utm_source=IPR+Research+Letter+-+The+Role+of+PR+in+Conscious+Capitalism+4-17&utm_campaign=Measuring+Influence+with+Infographic&utm_medium=email

Employees are ambassadors of their employers. That idea of “ambassadorship” isn’t really new, and it is much more literal than figurative. Employees (and, really, members of any organization) are insiders who represent their employers to people outside the company’s walls. That insider status makes employees authoritative and authentic communicators about their employers. So the natural question is, “How well do employees represent their companies?”

Notice that the question is not necessarily about better informing employees to make them more credible—there are many, many reams of research about that. Rather, the question is about results. Indeed, the better question would be, “How may we know when employees represent their companies well?” The focus, then, is being able to recognize effective employee representation with the outside world when we see it. The best way to achieve that focus is through measuring employee influence on corporate reputation.

This idea came to mind during a recent PRSA Central Illinois Chapter meeting held in Bloomington, Ill. The guest speaker was Ellen Schank, senior manager of reputation leadership at Allstate Insurance, which is headquartered near Chicago. She discussed the importance of managing her organization’s reputation to protect the brand, develop products and services, and drive recommendations and referrals. Most interestingly, she also explained Allstate’s regular measurement studies of the company’s reputation as perceived by key external and internal stakeholders.

According to Schank, managing Allstate’s reputation is a matter of a multifaceted measurement effort. Data are collected, analyzed, and reported about customer interactions, advertising, social media, investors, analysts, news coverage, and other dimensions that bear on reputation. These dimensions address the outside-in dynamics for managing Allstate’s corporate reputation, and Schank explained that these make up the bulk of the measurements.

More intriguing to me were the comparatively limited measurements of the inside-out dynamics of employee representation of Allstate. As the company’s website says, Allstate is comprised of “approximately 70,000 professionals made up of employees, agency owners and staff.” Among all these insiders, field agents are a critical link in the reputation management chain. But what of companies that don’t have such a public presence or field network?

I believe focused research on the inside-out dynamics of corporate reputation for a variety of organizations is needed. Such research would require the cooperation of organizations that are also willing to participate (anonymously or not) in research that would be shared publicly in conferences and in print. An effective, reliable, and valid research design could be proposed that protects corporate interests and provides much-needed knowledge. We need to know not only how well employees play the role of ambassadors, but more important, what ways of ambassadorship are most effective, when, and why. I’d welcome the opportunity to work with any organization to conduct such research.

Normal, IL–Dr. Sandra Metts, Emeritus Professor in the School of Communication at Illinois State University, was inducted into the Central States Communication Association’s (CSCA) Hall of Fame in April 2013.

The CSCA Hall of Fame recognizes the highest level of service to the association through mentoring of fellow members, fulfilling the responsibilities of various offices at the interest group and/or association level, regular participation on conference panels as a presenter or respondent, and/or advancing the mission of the association through scholarship and other means. Inductees must have shown a strong pattern of dedicated and continued service to the association over time; and, to qualify for induction, the candidate must have reached the rank of Emeritus Professor or be in the later stages of her/his career.

Dr. Metts has served CSCA throughout her lengthy membership with the association and her long career at Illinois State University. She served as Vice-President and program planner in 1997-1998 and President in 1998-1999. While Dr. Metts’ record of service to CSCA is impressive, it is only a small part of her record of service in the Central States region and beyond. Dr. Metts currently serves on the Executive Committee for the Western States Communication Association. She held several offices including Program Planner for the International Association for Relationship Research and the International Network on Personal Relationships. Dr. Metts has also been a member of the Planning Committee for the International Society for the Study of Personal Relationships. She has served on 11 editorial boards, including that of CSCA’s Communication Studies and has reviewed countless articles for other journals on an ad hoc basis.

Beyond her service to the discipline, the CSCA Hall of Fame Committee also recognized Dr. Metts’ enormous scholarly and teaching contributions. Since her first publication in 1985 on the newly discovered area of emotion in interpersonal communication, Dr. Metts has published over 20 empirical articles and more than 50 chapters in scholarly books and encyclopedias. She is also highly visible at regional, national, and international conventions with over 150 competitively selected papers, 25 of which have won top scholarship awards.

According to Dr. Larry Long, Executive Director of the School of Communication, “Dr. Metts’ scholarship is important because it has not simply enriched the historical or traditional areas of interpersonal communication, but has actually brought new areas of investigation into the discipline. For example, a decade ago, the topics that Dr. Metts’ has advanced in her research program would not have been found in convention programs or in interpersonal communication textbooks.”

Dr. Metts’ contributions to the discipline of communication are also evident through her work with students and her love for teaching. This has occurred first of all through her leadership in the development of our training model for graduate students teaching the introductory communication course. This program, largely influenced by Dr. Metts’ work, is a flagship model for other schools in the nation. In her courses, she works diligently with masters students leading several each year to present their work at regional and national conferences. This taste of academic research and presentation often inspires students to proceed to doctoral work. Dr. Metts continues working with them, frequently publishing book chapters and studies with these students continuing as their mentor, even as they are in doctoral programs around the nation.

The Central States Communication Association is a professional, academic organization of primary and secondary school teachers, students, college and university professors, and communication professionals. CSCA was founded in 1931 to promote the communication discipline in educational, scholarly, and professional endeavors. The association, which consists of the 13 Midwestern states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio.

Early Career Faculty Circles

CTLT’s Early-Career Faculty Circles offer faculty in their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year of service at ISU a combination of professional development and peer support. Join us for a series of lively conversations about surviving and thriving in the academy. “It would be easy not to do this,” commented one participant, “but if you make the time, you’ll be glad you did!”

The topics for the Spring Early-Career Faculty Circle meetings are drawn from the book The Courage to Teach: Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacher’s Life by Parker J. Palmer. The text “builds on a simple premise: good teaching cannot be reduced to technique but is rooted in the identity and integrity of the teacher.” No reading is required for participation in these circles. Each participant will receive a copy of the book, but we will provide executive summaries of chapters. Understanding how to be authentically present in the classroom enables teachers to be deeply connected with their students and their subject which, in turn, enhances the learning process.

Choose EITHER Wednesday OR Thursday to attend. NO PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. All sessions are held in the CTLT Commons, 301 S. Main. Attend as many as you can, but don’t worry if you can’t attend all.

Milner Library is again faced with the task of balancing our materials budget to cover high inflationary costs for databases, periodicals, and standing orders. Thankfully, we have not had to deal with this for quite a few years because of the recent budget increases recommended by the Academic Senate. Currently, however, we will be forced to cut a little over $100,000 for FY14 in order to offset inflation which averages over 5% annually.

We greatly value the faculty’s input as we work to identify these potential cuts and cancellations.

The survey should take you only a few minutes to mark the top 10+ journals/databases you regularly use, or you may simply e-mail your subject librarian a list of the top titles you use, and we will mark those for you. Be sure to indicate as well if there are new titles to which you would like us to subscribe. Please make your selections by April 19, 2013.

http://ilstu.libguides.com/PeriodicalsUsageSurvey

Based on the results of this survey and internal assessment of cost/use data, we will generate lists of suggested titles to be considered for cancellation which will then be returned to the departments/schools toward the end of April for final decision-making.

Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey and working with us to ensure that the periodicals, databases, and standing orders which we provide to the campus are in fact meeting the needs of you and your students.
