IMPORTANT Registration Announcements

Registration for the Summer/Fall 2013 semesters is right around the corner! Advanced registration for this period begins on March 18, 2013. Continue reading to view ALL of the IMPORTANT REGISTRATION announcements below from the Communication Advisement Team.

Registration Date/Time: Your registration date and time will be available on My Illinois State on March 1, 2013. It is very important to register for classes ON TIME. Otherwise you may miss out on available course offerings. Meet with your advisor in advance and have a plan (with plenty of options) ready to go on your assigned registration date.

Course Offerings: The Summer/Fall 2013 Course Offerings will be available on My Illinois State on March 1, 2013. You should use the Course Offerings to help you plan for your appointment with your advisor and create a list of options for your registration date. The “Course Offerings” link can be found under the “Academics” tab on My Illinois State.

Make an Appointment: It is crucial that you meet with your advisor every semester to make sure you are staying on track to finish your requirements and meet your graduation goal. Ideally, you should meet with your advisor 1 – 2 weeks before your registration date. If you cannot see your advisor before your registration date, DO NOT WAIT TO REGISTER. Use the tools available to you to make choices regarding your courses. Then, meet with your advisor to see if any changes should be made.

You can call (309) 438-7080 to make an appointment with your advisor. CALL EARLY to make an appointment – advisors’ schedules fill up quickly during registration!

*Remember, advisors do not advise via phone or email. You should make a face-to-face appointment.

**If you are more than 10 minutes late to your appointment, you will need to re-schedule so your advisor has an adequate amount of time to take care of your advisement needs.

Prep for your Appointment: Before your advising appointment, use the following tools to create a list of required and elective courses you would like to take:

Bring to your Appointment: You should bring the following to your advising appointment:

  • Course options for upcoming semester
  • Course Catalog
  • Advising Syllabus Contract (see below)
  • List of questions – Be prepared to have ALL of your questions answered during your appointment

Override Information: Students often wonder what they should do when classes start to fill up during registration. Please take a few minutes to review the Communication Override Practices so you are prepared if this situation arises.

Major Blocked Classes: The School of Communication has many diverse majors. As a result, some Communication classes are blocked for specific Communication majors (i.e., Visual Communication, Interactive Media, Public Relations, etc.). If you encounter the error message on My Illinois State that a class is “Blocked for Majors Only,” it simply means that particular class is restricted to a specific Communication major. In this case, you should select another Communication class for your schedule and meet with your advisor to go over your options.

Advising Syllabus & Contract: You are encouraged to learn more about your roles and responsibilities in the advising partnership and the Communication Advising Philosophy by reading the Communication Advising Syllabus. In addition, you should sign the Advising Syllabus Contract and bring it with you to your appointment.

We look forward to seeing you soon!
