Illinois State University’s student radio station, WZND, has earned a total of ten awards at this year’s Illinois Broadcasters Association Student Convention that was held on Friday, September 13th in Normal. WZND won five awards in the categories for Best Radio Aircheck, Best Radio Spot, Best Radio Station Promo, Best Station Website, and Best Community Service Project.
Emily Reardon ’13 of Ottawa won first place in Best Radio Aircheck for her on-air performance. WZND won first place for Best Community Service Project for the “WZND Wants U 2 Practice Safe Txt” campaign. Recipients of this award include Sarah Beckman ’14 of Lindenhurst, Chris Highland ’15 of Normal and the WZND staff. WZND’s Multimedia Department won first place in Best Station Website. Recipients of the award are Jake Wilford ’13 of Cary, and Brian Sayre ’14 of Lake Zurich. Tim Johnston ’13 of Normal won first place in Best Radio Spot for his Old Spice Deodorant spot featuring Tyler Knight ’13 of Normal. WZND won first place in Best Radio Station Promo for the department’s Bird’s I View fitness promo. Recipients of this award are Zack Sikora ’13 of Orland Park, and Tim Young ’15 of Monticello.
The station was also nominated in the categories for Best Radio Aircheck, Best Radio Spot, Best Use of Interactive Media, Best News Story and Best Radio PSA. Zach Bernard ’14 of Lockport won second place in Best Radio Aircheck for his on-air performance. Pete Radwanski ‘13 of Lake Zurich won second place in Best Radio Spot for his Neighborhood’s Thrift Shop spot featuring Andy Rezeckowski ’14 of Cary. WZND’s Amanda Peterlin ’13 of Frankfort won second place in Best Use of Interactive Media. Sarah Beckman ’14 of Lindenhurst won second place in Best Radio News Story for her story on an ISU Police Ride-along.
WZND’s Production Department won third place in Best Radio Public Service Announcement for the “Practice Safe Text” PSA. Recipients of this award include Zack Sikora ’13 of Orland Park, Tim Young ’15 of Monticello, Tim VanDuyne ’14 of Braidwood, and Gina Nowaczyk ’14 of Oak Forest.
The IBA Silver Dome winners were announced at IBA-U, a one-day conference for broadcasting students, on Friday, September 13, 2013 held at the Bone Student Center on the campus of Illinois State University in Normal.
