Mickey McCombs
Mickey McCombs, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, is the winner of the 2010 Scott M. Elliot Excellence Award for Outstanding Civil Service Staff. Leslie Oberts, staff member in the Department of Chemistry, received honorable mention.
McCombs first came to Illinois State University in 1975 and has held a number of position at the University since then. These positions include Stenographic Services (now defunct) as a Secretary II, Department of Business Administration (now the Department of Management & Marketing) as a Secretary III, the University Museum (now defunct) as a Secretary IV, and College of Arts & Sciences and Department of Sociology and Anthropology as Office Manager.
McCombs has two experiences at Illinois State that stand out as the most meaningful. The first was her job at the University Museum, and the second was her involvement in the clerical union. McCombs was part of the organizing committee to get a union on campus and was its president from July 1999 to January 2001. When McCombs is not working at Illinois State, she enjoys spending time with her four grandchildren: Sofia, 5 years old; Kyrie, 2 years old; Hayze, 9 months old; and Amora, 3 months old.
