College of Arts and Sciences

Message from the Dean

Welcome to the College of Arts and Sciences at Illinois State University. I invite you to explore on this site the many programs, majors, and minors that we have to offer you. We offer countless exciting academic choices for you to consider in planning your intellectual development and future career path.

We often say that the arts and sciences are the heart and soul of a university. This means much more, however, than simply that the College of Arts and Sciences is typically the largest college, or that it bears much of the responsibility for general education. Rather, it is because the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, with all of their diversity of approaches, seek to find answers to the same fundamental questions of higher education. The biologist, the anthropologist, and the poet use very different methods, but ultimately seek to understand our humanity and the nature of our world. An arts and sciences education will expose you to this diversity of approaches and disciplines, and also provide you with skills to prepare for your life and work after graduation: the ability to gather information and think critically, the ability to communicate clearly in speech and writing, and a lifelong desire to learn.

The College is committed to the integration of teaching and research, allowing students to see, and participate in, the scholarly enterprise. I urge you to take advantage of the opportunities afforded by all of our departments to expand your intellectual horizons and prepare for the rest of your life. As I enter my first year as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, I am extremely impressed with the dedication and commitment to students that I see in our outstanding faculty, and I am very excited about our future. I invite you to browse our departments’ websites and see for yourself all that the College of Arts and Sciences at Illinois State University has to offer for your future.

Sincerely,

Gregory B. Simpson
