At the time chapter 2 was written, seven months into the "surge", coalition fatalities had returned to near the highest levels of the war.
Since then, fatalities have fallen dramatically, as is best shown in the monthly fatality chart, below.

Jon Peltier has revised his Excel boxplot add-in so that it now displays outliers as individual points (extreme points outside 1.5 times the range of the middle quartiles). Below, we see the District of Columbia displayed as an outlier. Click here to obtain the add in (which works in both Excel 2003 and 2007).
